People have been familiar with silhouette portraits for many years. The somewhat mysterious "Shadow Cut" became associated with a French Aristocrat from the mid 18th century named Etienne De Silhouette and enjoyed popularity through the early 19th century.
With the advent of photography, silhouette artists found less demand for their services and became a dying art. Silhouette artists were not commonly seen performing in the "modern" age.
